Students from the New Albany Arts Council won Freddie G Outstanding Production award at the 2015 Junior Theater Festival, held January 16, 17 and 18 at the Cobb Galleria Centre in Atlanta, GA.

Additionally,  New Albany Arts Council student Mitchell Kallner received a Freddie G Award for Excellent Individual Performance by a Male.

As one of just nine schools from across the country to win a Freddie G Outstanding Production Award, the group performed a song from their production for the festival’s 4,500+ attendees.

The 24 students from New Albany Arts Council, ages 9-16, presented selections from Disney’s My Son Pinocchio JR. for Karen Sharp, education director at Seattle Children’s Theatre, and director, composer, music director, and performer Rob Rokicki (HairsprayLove, NY)

Said Rokicki: “This group gave us exciting, well-executed choreography. They had strong physicality, character work and commitment.” Added Sharp, “The students did a fantastic job—they used acting, singing and dancing to tell us a beautiful story.”

The students who traveled to the 2015 Junior Theater Festival on behalf of New Albany Arts Council are:

Hannah Bank, Kalin Bennington, Michael Bohman, Chloe Challacombe, Zoe Greear, Jaiden Gupta, Keegan Gupta, Meghan Hohman, Rachel Hohman, Meghan Kallner, Mitchell Kallner, Gabby Mangia, Sophia Orsinelli, Mary Pedrozo, Monica Pedrozo, David Rice, Lexi Schell, Marlee Scholten, Colin Sproule, Macyn Swincicki, Kate Trybus, Elan Watson, Alex Wilhelm, and Aiden Zallocco-Smith

This is the group’s first time at the Junior Theater Festival.

About Disney’s My Son Pinocchio JR.

With Music and Lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by David Stern, Disney’s My Son Pinocchio JR. is based on the classic tale of an aging toymaker and his puppet, Pinocchio.  Complete with the Blue Fairy, Stromboli and a lively cast of characters, the story follows Pinocchio's journey from an awkward wooden puppet to a real, live boy and Geppetto's transformation from demanding creator to a real, live father.

Produced by the Junior Theater Group in partnership iTheatrics, a leading educational theater company that creates innovative experiences and products for the public and private sector, the Junior Theater Festival is the world’s largest festival celebrating young people and the transformative power of musical theater.  This year’s title sponsors were Music Theatre International, Disney Theatrical Group, and Playbill®.  The Junior Theater Festival was founded in 2003. In 2010 the Festival became an annual event.
